Congratulations to the artists who have their work featured here. These are the images that I have selected to enter into the upcoming BIENNIAL SOUTHEASTERN COMPETITION at Birmingham-Southern College.

This is a prestigious competition and it will be an honor if any are selected to be in the show. I personally hope that all of the images are picked.

To me, each artist has created a unique image that is an excellent and artistic example of photography or digital art.

*I had to make some very hard decisions to narrow down my selections to the limit of ten images per teacher.

SPHS Fall Student Art Show '06

The 06 art show is shaping up to be the best ever. My students have produced a lot of great work this semester and I know the art from the other art classes is going to be great. Here are the works from digital photograph I and II that were chosen for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and honorable mention.
The first category is the black/white portrait assignment. It is the students first use of the class camera and studio equipment. The goal of the assignment was to capture a unique image of your subject. The image needed to be in good exposure, focus, composition. The images are in no particular order. Feel free to offer your picks in the comments section.

The final category in Photography I is a collage assignment that uses images from stock photography found on the internet. The object of the assignment was to create a collage that creates the illusion of space.

Now showing at the Birmingham Museum of Art is a show of southern photographer William Christenberry.

"Since the early 1960s, photographer William Christenberry has plumbed the regional identity of the American South, focusing his attention on his homeland, Hale County, Alabama. William Christenberry Photographs: 1961-2005 offers a retrospective view of his photography from his earliest use of the camera as a means to provide studies for painting to its evolution as a vital means of personal expression. Christenberry's theme is singular: the history, the very story of place, is at the heart of his project.
Christenberry has been a professor at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Washington, D.C. since 1968. He is world renowned for his photography, sculpture, drawings, and paintings that pay tribute to his roots in rural Alabama. His work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.; Museum of Modern Art in New York; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art." From BMA press release

When I worked at the museum I was lucky enough to meet William Christenberry and help him instal one of his sculptures downtown. He is a very interesting artist and person. I have also seen the current show at the museum. It is a great exhibit and well worth a trip downtown. The show is open until December 24th

Evening in the Park

The Patrons of the Park are holding their annual fund raiser on April 1st from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Spain Park High School. This wonderful event showcases the talent of our performing art students with performances by the Park Singers, Jazz band and dance classes. The visual art students have much of their work on display as well. The event also features a wonderful dinner and silent auction. Here is the poster I have designed for this years event.

Robert Rauschenberg

One of my favorite modern artists is Robert Rauschenberg. "Rauschenberg began making silkscreen paintings in 1962. He would screen-print images from books and magazines, along with his own photographs, onto the canvas, then apply painterly brushstrokes reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. His intention was to escape the familiarity of objects and college. The images are organized in a loose, poetic manner, creating an impression of visual flux that allows the viewer to free-associate." I enjoy that fact, that his images are loose and open to interpretation. While the imagery may be loosely organized his compositions are extremely sophisticated. While they may look easy to create, his style can be challenging to emulate in your own work. Rauschenberg's work does translate fairly well to Photoshop, many of his screen printing and other techniques can be created using various Photoshop techniques. Our next large project will be to create a digital collage that attempts to recreate Rauschenberg's style. Before starting your own project take the time to examine some of the following of Rauschenberg's compositions. *You can click on the images to see a larger version of them.

On a sheet of paper, find the following objects among the compositions. Write the item and the corresponding letter(S) after it. Then choose one image to write about. Write an analysis of how Rauschenberg uses the elements and principles of art to create areas of contrast that move the viewers eyes around the composition. This should be written as a complete and well thought out paragraph.
THIS ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH 50 POINTS AND WILL BE GRADED FOR GRAMMAR

Hello all,
As I ramble around the internet I sometimes find art that inspires me. I will try to post some links on this blog so you may go and see what all the fuss is about. Next semester we will be doing a bit more collage, as well as trying to get more content in our work. The artist Maggie Taylor does both, her work is very surreal, and reminds me of the painter Renee' Magrite. Here are two examples of his work:

Winter Art Show

Mark your calendars, December 5th is the student art show and sale. This annual event showcases the best student art from the first semester as well as the art of many local professionals. The event is from 6 to 8 in the lobby and library of the school. Be sure to bring cash to make purchases. Student artists receive 80% of the sales. This years invitation features the digital collage of arts C Selman a sophmore and digital imaging student.

Next assignments

I am new to this medium but I want to try it out and see where it leads me. The school year is about a third complete and my classes seem to be progressing along very well. Our next assignment will be to re-touch old photographs. While this is a bit dull it does offers some real-world applications for using Photoshop. Hopefully my students will not find it too boring. We will also be working on a studio project called "Make object special". In this assignment the students will bring mundane objects to the studio to photograph on their assigned day. The objects should be photographed in such a way as to reveal something interesting about what would otherwise be just another mundane object. Check out last years examples on the Spain Park Art Gallery (see link on the side).

My favorite is the roll of paper by S Young. What is yours?
